Counseling with
CREATIVITY
Each of us has a unique voice, as individual as a fingerprint. In a gentle atmosphere of respect, it is my job to guide in the discovery of voice or in many cases, the re-claiming of voice. Life is sometimes perplexing, traumatic, and absurd; in reaction we may become anxious, depressed, confused or shut down. We may experience loss of self, or what is called “the dark night of the soul.”
Story medicine, poetry therapy, and one’s own writings offer powerful pathways to healing. I draw deeply from an integration of psychology and the creative arts therapies. Drama therapy has helped me to appreciate the power of play and spontaneity. Poetry therapy has taught me about the richness and meaning of story and symbol. And social work has schooled me in practical problem solving.
The great poet Stanley Kunitz once wrote: ‘’The imagination is a deep-sea diver that rakes the bottom of the poet’s mind and dredges up sleeping images. . . . If we go deep enough, we may discover the secret place where our key images have been stored since childhood.’’ Do you want to harness the benevolent power of the imagination and the treasures of the unconscious?
